In the spring of 2020, I encountered a vessel that radiated an overwhelming sense of strength and duty in a Hokkaido port.
This was the patrol vessel “ESAN” (PL12), belonging to the Otaru Coast Guard Office. ✨
Named after Mt. Esan, a famous scenic peak in Hokkaido, this 1,000-ton class vessel serves as a “Guardian of the Sea,” protecting our safety day and night in the often-turbulent northern waters.
I chose to capture this moment in monochrome to emphasize the raw, metallic texture of the ship and the stark contrast of its “JAPAN COAST GUARD” markings against the grey sea. ⚓️
Every line on its hull tells a story of courage and resilience on the front lines of the ocean.
Through this photo, I wanted to convey not just the machinery, but the spirit of those who serve aboard her.
Thank you for joining me on this visual journey through Hokkaido’s maritime landscape. 🌊
