Hokkaido is a paradise for food lovers.
We have amazing local dishes like Genghis Khan (grilled lamb), fresh sushi, and creamy soft-serve ice cream!
But there’s one thing you absolutely cannot miss: Ramen 😊 If you visit Hokkaido, I highly recommend trying a bowl.

Have you ever tried Ramen?
By the way, are you familiar with ramen? Take a look at the picture above—this is what it looks like! 🍜🍜
Does it look delicious?
If it’s your first time, it might be hard to imagine the taste.
Let me introduce you to the world of ramen.
What is Ramen, anyway?
Ramen consists of wheat noodles served in a rich soup.
It’s topped with delicious ingredients like Chashu (braised pork), Menma (bamboo shoots), soft-boiled eggs, green onions, and seaweed.
The Soul of Ramen: The Soup
The real secret to delicious ramen is… the soup! ❣
There are two main types of broth:
- “Paitan” (Cloudy soup): A rich, creamy broth made by boiling pork bones.
- “Chintan” (Clear broth): A light, transparent soup made from chicken, vegetables, or seafood.
Both are simmered for hours to create a deep, savory flavor.
How to choose your flavor & Local specialties
These broths are then seasoned with either Soy Sauce (Shoyu), Salt (Shio), or Miso.
You can choose your favorite!
One of the most interesting things about ramen is that different cities in Hokkaido have their own signature styles:
- Sapporo City: Famous for Miso Ramen 🍜
- Hakodate City: Famous for Shio (Salt) Ramen 🍜
- Asahikawa City: Famous for Shoyu (Soy Sauce) Ramen 🍜
Each city has its own unique flavor profile.
Dining Etiquette and Prices
Ramen shops are very casual—no dress code required! Usually, your bowl arrives within 10 minutes of ordering, and most people finish eating in about 15 minutes.
The price is usually between 800 yen and 1,300 yen.
While many shops now accept credit cards or mobile payments, some local shops still only take cash, so it’s good to have some yen ready!
Ramen is “fast, affordable, and delicious.” ヾ(.>﹏<.)ノ✧*。
When you come to Hokkaido, please stop by a ramen shop and enjoy a bowl! ❤
