The Secret Fruit Kingdom of Hokkaido
Located just a short drive from popular tourist destinations like Otaru, Niki-cho is widely known among locals as the “Fruit Capital” of Hokkaido.

We visited Ohnoen Farm on June 28th.
The weather was a bit cloudy with a very light drizzle—honestly, the perfect temperature for a light long-sleeve shirt and outdoor activities.
We arrived around 10:30 AM and were greeted by a wonderful surprise!
Because of the rain the previous day, the farm had opened their “Site 2” (the mountain orchard) for the very first time this season.
Plus, since there was a local cherry festival happening nearby, the orchard was wonderfully quiet.
We shared this massive, beautiful space with only about 20 other people.
It felt like our own private farm!
Tasting the Ruby Gems
Walking into the orchard was like stepping into a fairy tale.
The branches were heavily bowing under the weight of countless, bright red cherries shining like little rubies.

The taste? Absolutely incredible.
They were bursting with sweet, refreshing juice.
Biting into a freshly picked Hokkaido cherry straight from the tree is an experience you simply cannot get at a supermarket.
My kids were in absolute heaven, happily munching away.
A Real Adventure for the Kids
While the taste was unforgettable, the best part of the day for my kids was the experience itself.

When I asked them what they loved most, they said, “Climbing the stepladders to reach the cherries at the very top!” Ohnoen provides small stepladders so visitors can safely reach the highest branches where the sunniest, reddest cherries grow.
For the kids, hunting for the perfect cherry high up in the trees felt like a real-life treasure hunt.
Unbeatable Value: All-You-Can-Eat, No Time Limit
If you’ve researched fruit picking in Japan, you might know it can sometimes be a bit pricey or strictly timed (usually 30 or 40 minutes).
This is where Ohnoen Farm truly shines.
Despite rising costs everywhere, they have kept their pricing incredibly generous:
Cost: Only 990 JPY per person (Elementary school age and up). That’s less than $7 USD!
Time Limit: None. It’s strictly unlimited time.
You can relax, take beautiful photos, and eat until your heart (and stomach) is completely content.
We stayed for about an hour before a brief rain shower rolled in, leaving us with full bellies and massive smiles.
A Note on Mindful Travel
At the end of our visit, I read a beautiful message printed on the farm’s brochure:
“We work hard, rain or shine, tending to our fields so that everyone can have fun, stay safe, and leave with a full stomach.”

Reading this warmed my heart.
You can truly taste the love and hard work the farmers put into this land.
For those of you planning to visit, I highly recommend embracing the concept of mindful travel.
Let’s support these incredible local farmers by treating their orchards with love-gently picking the fruit without breaking the branches, taking our trash home, and following their simple guidelines.
It’s the perfect way to show gratitude for such a wonderful experience.
Plan Your Visit!
Ohnoen Farm gave our family another beautiful summer memory, and I know it will do the same for yours.
